Intent

At Askern Moss Road Infant Academy, all children will be taught a high-quality PSHE education that equips them with the skills and knowledge to embrace creating a happy and successful adult life. We aim for children to make informed choices about their well-being, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy.

We will build on children’s knowledge and skills each year, helping them to make decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. PSHE and Relationships Education will support our children to develop resilience, know when and how to ask for help, and understand where they can access support.

PSHE has an integral part to play in building pupils’ mental wellbeing and their understanding of themselves as part of a family, community and wider society. As our pupils grow, they will develop an understanding of their rights as global citizens and the responsibilities that this brings.

Implementation

At Moss Road, we follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work, which meets the requirements of the National Curriculum and EYFS Framework. Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase, including statutory Relationships and Health Education, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education (SMSC), and the fundamental British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect and Tolerance, and Individual Liberty.

The Jigsaw programme is adapted to ensure that our curriculum meets the needs of our children and our local context.

Jigsaw brings together Personal, Social and Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development through six half-termly topics:

• Celebrating Difference
• Dreams and Goals
• Healthy Me
• Relationships
• Changing Me

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is also developed beyond discrete lessons. Many aspects are reinforced through day-to-day interactions, assemblies, stories, visits and visitors, providing children with opportunities to apply their learning within real-life contexts.

Through this approach, children progressively develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to make informed choices, build positive relationships, develop their well-being and respond appropriately to challenges and risks.
