Askern Moss Road Infant Academy

Design & Technology

Intent

At Askern Moss Road Infant Academy, our intent through the Kapow Primary Design and Technology scheme is to inspire pupils to become creative thinkers and confident problem-solvers. We aim to develop children’s practical skills, creativity and resilience through engaging, hands-on learning experiences that encourage them to design, make and evaluate purposeful products.

Through a broad and progressive curriculum, pupils build knowledge and skills in areas such as structures, mechanisms, textiles and food technology, while learning how design and technology impact everyday life. We encourage children to take risks, work collaboratively and reflect on their learning, ensuring all pupils can develop the confidence and skills needed to succeed and enjoy Design and Technology.

Implementation

We use Kapow Primary to support the delivery of our Design and Technology curriculum from Reception through to Year 2. Kapow provides a carefully sequenced programme that enables children to develop their design, making, technical and evaluation skills progressively as they move through the school.

In Reception, our Design and Technology learning supports the EYFS framework, encouraging children to explore materials, tools, construction and making through hands-on experiences. Children are encouraged to develop their curiosity, problem-solving skills and independence as they explore how things work, make choices and begin to design and create their own products.

As children progress into Key Stage 1, they build on this foundation through the Kapow curriculum. Children are introduced to the design process, developing their ability to identify problems, generate ideas, plan, make and evaluate products. They have opportunities to work with a range of materials, tools and techniques through areas such as structures, mechanisms, textiles and cooking and nutrition.

Our Design and Technology curriculum follows Kapow's Design, Make, Evaluate and Technical Knowledge strands. Children develop their practical skills alongside their understanding of materials, structures, mechanisms and the purpose of products. They are encouraged to discuss and explain their ideas, make decisions, test and improve their designs and evaluate their finished products against a purpose or set of criteria.

Our Design and Technology curriculum is carefully planned to build on prior learning and ensure that children make progress throughout their time at Askern Moss Road Infant Academy. The spiral approach means that key knowledge and skills are revisited and developed with increasing complexity, allowing children to become increasingly confident, independent and creative designers and makers. In Key Stage 1, our curriculum covers the National Curriculum expectations for the end of Key Stage 1.
