At Moss Road, we recognise that high-quality Physical Education and physical development are essential to children’s current and future health and wellbeing. Our intent is to promote a lifelong love of physical activity and sport, enabling all pupils to develop the skills, confidence, and motivation needed to lead active and healthy lives.
From the Early Years, children are provided with daily opportunities to explore movement, manage risk, and face physical challenges through access to outdoor learning environments. These experiences support the development of resilience, independence, and the fundamental physical skills required for everyday life and for future success in Physical Education. As children progress through the school, they follow a varied and inclusive Physical Education curriculum that builds progressively on physical competence, confidence, and positive mental attitudes.
The curriculum includes units that focus on developing balance, control, coordination, and focus, alongside skill-based units that teach specific techniques needed to participate in a range of games and sports. Children are given time to practise and refine these skills before applying them in increasingly challenging contexts. We encourage pupils to understand that everyone develops at a different pace and to recognise and celebrate their own progress and achievements.
Physical activity also provides valuable opportunities for children to engage with the wider school community. At Moss Road, pupils in Key Stage 1 are offered regular opportunities to take part in sporting events with other local schools. These experiences develop not only physical skills but also teamwork, communication, resilience, and the confidence to try new activities in supportive environments.
Through our Physical Education curriculum, we aim to ensure all children experience enjoyment, success, and a sense of achievement, laying strong foundations for lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
As children move through school, they build on previous learning and progressively develop their fundamental movement skills, including agility, balance, coordination and control. In EYFS, children develop these skills through regular opportunities to use the outdoor areas, school hall and fields. In KS1, pupils take part in PE lessons twice a week, following units from the Your PE scheme to further develop and apply their physical skills.
Each lesson includes objectives for Head, Hand and Heart, ensuring that children develop their thinking and understanding, physical skills, and personal and social skills. Alongside physical development, pupils learn to communicate, collaborate, solve problems, persevere and demonstrate positive attitudes towards others.
Teachers follow the PE curriculum and adapt learning to meet the needs of their pupils, while also preparing children to apply their skills in team sports and games. Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to practise, refine and apply their learning in different contexts. Pupils take part in Trust-organised sports festivals each half term and an annual dance show, developing confidence, teamwork and a sense of achievement. These experiences help children to enjoy physical activity and build the foundations for an active, healthy lifestyle.
