At Askern Moss Road Infant Academy, we believe that children deserve a broad, balanced, high-quality curriculum, rich in knowledge, skills and meaningful experiences. We aim for children to be engaged and active in their learning through a range of topics, subjects and lessons. We also believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop and build their independence, self-esteem and self-confidence to become lifelong learners. 

We have planned our curriculum content, to ensure full coverage and delivery of Curriculum 2014 through topics which are relevant and of interest to the children. Our curriculum reflects the individual nature of our school together with prescribed elements from the national curriculum. The needs and interests of our children drive what is happening in our school, with children's achievement levels the starting point for all curriculum planning.

We believe that every childhood matters and that the innate qualities children have, including creativity, curiosity and a love of learning, should be fully nurtured. We recognise that all pupils are entitled to have access to a broad range of learning experiences. This will allow them to develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes necessary for their self-fulfilment, and to enable them to become responsible citizens in the 2st century.

The curriculum is regularly reviewed at phase and whole school levels, with feedback from pupil and parental voice. All stakeholders therefore have ownership of the curriculum at Askern Moss Road Infant Academy.

Key Aims of Moss Road’s Curriculum 

  • To provide opportunities for all pupils to learn and to achieve irrespective of social background, culture, race, gender, difference in ability and disabilities.
  • To help children to develop lively, enquiring minds, the ability to question and argue rationally, and to apply themselves to tasks and physical skills.
  • To provide skills of English, Maths and Information & Communication Technology, helping them to develop enquiring minds and the ability to think rationally.
  • To develop a curriculum which promotes children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and supports them in developing principles for distinguishing between right and wrong.
  • To encourage children to think creatively and critically.
  • To develop the children’s physical skills and promote their personal, social, health and emotional well-being.
  • To help children to understand the world in which they live and the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations.
  • To actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

  • To help children to appreciate human achievements and aspirations.

We believe that the curriculum should stimulate an enjoyment of and a commitment to learning, to encourage the best possible progress and the highest attainment for all pupils, preparing them effectively for the next steps in their education.

Curriculum Organisation

The general principles within which the curriculum will develop are contained in the Education Reform Act. The Act also sets out key features that must figure in every pupil’s curriculum.

The National Curriculum comprises:

Four Core Subjects: English, Mathematics, ICT, Science

Foundation Subjects: History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education

These ten subjects are not intended to be a complete curriculum and other aspects of our curriculum include Personal, Health and Social Education.

Key Areas of our Curriculum Intent

Through our curriculum we intend to:

Develop core learning; placing a strong emphasis on our children becoming fluent readers and at least meeting national expectations in Speaking & Listening, Reading, Writing, Maths and Science.

Develop Foundation Learning: ensuring that all children reach their potential and at least meet national expectations in the Creative Arts, Humanities, Technology & Computing and RE.

Develop learning behaviours in our children; developing the behaviours the children need to succeed in the world such as concentration, resilience, the enjoyment of learning and curiosity; supporting children to develop a growth mindset

Develop the holistic wellbeing of our children: ensuring that they develop character and a moral compass, know how to keep themselves safe and healthy and become responsible members of the community.

Provide a range of experiences beyond the curriculum; taking into account their previous experiences and providing a ‘bucket list’ of experiences to inspire awe, wonder and a thirst for learning in our children.
