Intent

Science plays a vital role in helping children develop curiosity, deepen their understanding of the world around them, and build the confidence to question and explore. A high-quality, well-sequenced science education encourages pupils to think critically, investigate ideas, and make sense of their experiences through observation and enquiry, supporting both academic achievement and the development of independent learners.

Through our science curriculum, we aim to inspire children to become curious, inquisitive and analytical thinkers with a broad understanding of the natural world. Pupils are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, make careful observations, carry out investigations, and record and present their findings in a variety of ways. In doing so, they develop the confidence and skills to think and work like scientists.

Our curriculum is built around three key strands: scientific knowledge and understanding, working scientifically, and science in action. These strands run throughout each unit, ensuring a broad and balanced approach to learning. Children develop their knowledge across the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics, while also learning about the processes and methods of science through practical enquiry. They are supported to understand how science applies to everyday life and how it continues to shape the world around them.

A progressive approach to the teaching of knowledge and skills ensures that learning is carefully sequenced and builds over time. New knowledge is introduced clearly and revisited regularly, allowing children to deepen their understanding and apply their learning in different contexts. By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils are able to carry out simple investigations, make predictions, use basic scientific vocabulary, and begin to interpret and explain their findings.

We recognise the importance of making science accessible and inclusive for all learners. Our curriculum reflects a diverse range of scientists, perspectives and contexts, helping children to see themselves within the subject and understand its relevance to different communities and cultures. Opportunities for collaboration, discussion and reflection support pupils’ social, moral, spiritual and cultural development, while also encouraging respect for different viewpoints.

Technology is used to enhance learning through research, digital representations and interactive activities, supporting children to find, evaluate and use scientific information effectively. Strong links between the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 ensure continuity and progression, building on early experiences and developing secure foundations for future learning.

Through this curriculum, we aim to foster a lifelong curiosity about the world and ensure all children leave Moss Road with the knowledge, skills and confidence to explore, question and understand science in meaningful ways.

Implementation

Learning is revisited and built upon over time. For example, children begin by exploring the natural world and making simple observations in Reception before developing their understanding of plants, animals, materials, habitats and seasonal change through Years 1 and 2.

Scientific vocabulary is introduced and developed alongside knowledge and skills, enabling pupils to talk about their learning and communicate their findings clearly. Our Science Progression Map sets out the progression of knowledge, vocabulary and working scientifically skills across the school.

We provide opportunities for pupils to apply their scientific knowledge through practical investigations, observation, measurement, sorting, recording and research. This supports children to develop the confidence and skills to think and work like scientists.
